Already during his studies at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, the Dutchman Piet Mondrian occupied himself with the basics of drawing and design. After his first attempts at impressionist and cubist painting, he took the big step forward, towards abstraction, the "expression of pure reality", as he said.
