The Gräflich Münster'sche Manufaktur brings back the submerged Rome. The homely mural is the work of a British master.

Ancient Rome had perished, but Rome lived on. On the rubble of its faded splendour, new dwellings were built in the Middle Ages. Earth was heaped up and history covered over. Cows now grazed on the eastern part of the old Roman Forum, once the centre of the Eternal City. The area was therefore given the name "Campo Vaccino" - meaning "cow pasture" - which was common until the 18th century.

In his painting of 1839, the British landscape painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) looks down on the area. Modern Rome - Campo Vaccino is immersed in the shimmering air between sky, silent columns and setting sun. Last rays of sunlight make the buildings glow. The city dwellers are still quickly going about their business, and the pale moon already appears on the horizon. When the painting was first exhibited at the Royal Academy, a modified extract from a poem by Lord Byron was placed alongside the imposing painting. The lines from Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1818) read:

Turner began experimenting in oils around 1795. He studied the landscape and history painters of the 16th and 17th centuries, copying works by Renaissance and Baroque masters. Turner set out to master all the styles of landscape painting he admired. And to reinterpret them. For his paintings are ideals that conjure with light and venture almost to abstraction. In this way, the British artist anticipated movements such as Impressionism and Abstract Art.

Working from dark to light, from around 1810 he primed his landscape paintings with white. This made his landscapes more luminous and light.
