Inspiration for your living room

Classic, retro, modern - make your living room look just the way you like it

The living room is where we live, play and laugh. This is where we relax on the couch, read a good book or the newspaper, binge-watch our favourite series, chat with friends or loved ones and simply enjoy our free time. This is where we spend most of our time, at least when we are awake. That's why it's only natural that we want to feel comfortable in our living rooms. A living room should be not only beautiful, but ideally it should also embody our lifestyle and be functional - for example with reading corners or dining areas.

Wallpapers are the perfect design medium for this purpose. They come in all conceivable designs and styles, are quick and easy to apply and can be used as accents or to cover the entire room. In addition, they are relatively inexpensive, can be replaced at will and, at least when quality wallpaper is purchased, are also durable. It is also worth investing a little more money in high-quality wallpapers because they are manufactured not only with sustainability in mind, but above all because they do not pose a threat to the indoor climate and health as they do not contain PVC, plasticisers or solvents.

Key tips for your living room

First, it is important to decide how you want to use wallpaper. What do you hope to achieve? Do you primarily want to put your favourite colours on the walls and generally need colour in your life? Or do you want to skilfully emphasise your tasteful furnishings? Or perhaps you envisage an eye-catcher for a particular wall? Basically, wallpapers create a warm, homely atmosphere in no time at all and rooms look much more sophisticated and "furnished" than just with furniture. Nevertheless, there are certain pitfalls that you should avoid - we'll tell you exactly how.

Large rooms can handle strong designs

The larger your living room, the more wall space can be accentuated with dark colours or eye-catching designs. If you like to use wallpaper with striking patterns or bold colours, you should consider which wall you want to highlight. Using such wallpapers over a large area can quickly become constricting and unsettling. But to set individual accents, for example to emphasise special pieces of furniture or simply to offer a unique eye-catcher, such statement wallpapers in bold colours and shapes, e.g. with high-contrast geometric patterns, are perfect. They are very suitable if you like to receive guests or want to separate an area in your living room as a dining room, for example.

A similar effect can be achieved with photo wallpapers, which attract attention based on their images alone. Depending on your wishes, different effects can be achieved through the colour scheme or the motif: more stimulating, activating or also calming, dream-inducing effects are possible.

Combinations of plain wallpapers have a harmonious effect

We also offer matching plain wallpapers in our collections that can be harmoniously combined with the selected design. In this way, larger wall surfaces can be included in your new room design - without overwhelming the room. An innovation in this area is the twin wallpaper from Hohenberger, which combines design and plain wallpaper and allows for a personalized transition between the two. In this way, you can easily and individually adapt your wallpaper to the conditions of your living room and your wishes, e.g. to make low sideboards stand out from the wall decoration above them and at the same time bring them together stylistically.

Do not overload small rooms

The smaller your living room, the lighter the colours and more discreet the patterns you should use; moreover, you should accentuate only individual sections with eye-catching designs. Such wallpapers can even make the living room look larger, especially in combination with mirrors, light-coloured furniture and white curtains. If you need an atmosphere of peace and relaxation in your room, you can achieve this with such a design. If that is not your goal, you don't have to do without great, exciting wallpaper designs: because at Hohenberger, there is a large selection of unique wallpapers with special designs, which, as recommended by us, tend to use reserved, small-format motifs in stronger colours or large-format, special designs in lighter colours. Almost anything is possible with wallpaper.

What colours go together?

Basically, you can use wallpaper to emphasise existing furnishings by picking up on existing colour tones or using similar colours - or you can try to create strong contrasts. It's up to your personal taste. It is advisable to combine cooler tones with warmer colours, plants or natural materials so that the room does not appear too cold. Grey and cream-coloured wallpapers are particularly good to combine, for example with green, purple or red. Such colours also give you every freedom when using furniture, textiles and wall decorations. In principle, however, we believe that anything goes! It is your home and therefore any colour combination is possible.

Which design is in fashion?

When choosing the design, your taste is of course decisive, but you can of course be inspired by current trends. In addition to flowers, leaves and jungle motifs, subtle designs in wood, stone or concrete look are also in vogue and create a calm, sometimes warm, sometimes cool atmosphere.

Haptic elements on wallpaper can create a special effect. Through the unique surface structure created by trimming with flock or foam, shiny particles or glass beads, you can feel the design, so to speak, and not just see it. Such wallpapers create a sensual atmosphere, especially when you, your family or your guests run your hands over them from time to time.
