This colour-intensive painting by Paul Gauguin has been enlarged by Hohenberger Manufaktur für Tapeten to an impressive size of 2.70 x 4.20 metres. A magic hovers over this painting. Time seems to stand still. And indeed, the French painter Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) captured life-time in this picture. It is called Day of the God (Mahana no Atua). The Tahitian moon goddess Hina stands as a carved statue in the centre. Her hand movement symbolises the bringing forth of new life. The idyllic beach scene seems real, yet it is full of references to life and passing. The symmetrical composition of the picture supports this meaningful charge.

On the left, two women in white robes carry offerings to dedicate to Hina. On the right, in bright red, two Tahitian women dance the upaupa, an erotic dance of the island. In the foreground, in ochre orange as a warm skin tone, one sees the central group. The three women appear to be bathing or recovering from a bath. Their poses, however, suggest that they represent three stages of life: Birth, Life and Death. On the left, birth, a woman in a foetal position, her toes touching the water. In the centre, sitting upright with her feet clearly in the water, life. Finally, on the right, turned away and almost melting into the ground, a dying woman. Water and moving waves symbolise the life-giving power of the sea.

This Tahiti mural brings bold colours to your wall

The oil painting was created in Paris in 1894, when Gauguin returned from his first period of living and working in Tahiti. He was physically ailing, so only 16 works date from that year. Nevertheless, the strength with which he created Day of God is remarkable. The contrasting hues, flat surfaces and abstract forms were typical of Gauguin's style. His Post-Impressionism points to future generations of artists who were inspired by this power. One of his pieces of advice is often quoted: "Don't paint too much directly from nature. Art is an abstraction. Study nature, then ponder it and appreciate the creation that will result ..."
